The internet: endless fascination OR romoting distraction

The internet has become known as the mother ship of all information from all over the world; known as the place where the average person can go looking for one piece of information and come out with dozens more facts and articles than one could imagine. The internet has become the most widely used tool in colleges and other schools for reports, studies, and other educational purposes in recent years and for good reason: the internet is capable of providing almost unlimited knowledge. Everything from scientific journals to worldwide news can be found on one site or another on the internet. Being "connected" has brought people from around the world closer to each other and has led to scientists, scholars, and the everyday man from around the globe to share ideas, discoveries, and evidence with one another. Critics to the wonderful tool have said that it is nothing more than a distraction, no matter what good it has brought us, and that the internet contains information that is deemed unnecessary or inappropriate, but who is to say what information is useless? The best part about the internet is that you can find virtually any information, whether it’s relevant or not. Being distracted and loafing around on the internet is not the internet's itself fault, but rather the user. The internet cannot take you to a site that is distracting from your work, study, or that paper that is due first thing in the morning, the user has to make that decision himself. For downtime and relaxation, the internet is still a useful tool, letting you take your mind off of work or school and helping you connect and talk with friends, family, or loved ones no matter how far away. The internet is not some useless distraction; it is a tool that has helped better the lives of many around the world.

My opinion on Georgia's proposed new immigration law.

In my own personal opinion, I am reluctant to hear about the new immigration law that is going into effect in Georgia. I also like that since the idea was proposed, there have been reports of illegal immigrant numbers decreasing. The one thing I find myself as being what critics describe as unfair, is the high price of the fine which is placed on the convicted illegal immigrants, $125,000. That, even to a financially stable family let alone a family that may be experiencing some form of poverty, is a lot of money to come by. Immigrants work for very low wages and that could be a situation that they could never get out of. However, I do like the imprisonment part of the bill, but would also like to see that the idea be followed up by deportation.

Would you attempt if you KNEW you couldn't fail?

Well of course, who wouldn't? No matter what the task was, I could not fail? I would then be taking the most advanced courses and classes that the college allowed me too. Perhaps I would be seeking employment at one of the higher up establishments in town or convincing a bank to loan me money without having to pay interest, or anything at all back to them. If I had that kind of power, then there would be no literal limits to my personal wealth or education. Maybe I could even become the next top athlete or the next biggest cultural star. Perhaps, if this was true, world domination is in order?

Television is wrongly termed "the idiot box"

The modern television has been termed the "idiot box" by many of its critics who have aired this statement in newspapers, magazines, and some, ironically, on television stations. While the television does have many broadcasts that have no educational or factual value to them, there are hundreds of broadcasts and stations that do. The television is a source of education and knowledge as well as a source of entertainment. The news channels, science channels, and history channels all have important information that can help and better educate us than by reading that same information by showing examples, directions, and photographs that would have been too small or not in enough detail. The news channels have become a huge source of our information in the modern day life, giving us worldwide news that a newspaper could not have, and the latest coverage from a disaster area or from an important event that is taking place. The history channels have also been a success and have many shows that give information on the early Americas and the rest of the world. A lot of historical information I have learned has not come from a high school information or college classes, but from history channels. Those are just two examples of important channels and stations that the television has brought us and there are hundreds more like it to choose from, showing that the television is more than just some "idiot box".

If you could choose to read any sort of "literature" what would it be and why?

If I could read any sort of literature ever created, it would be either the original version of The Odyssey or the Presidential Diary. I loved Roman/Greek mythology and The Odyssey is no doubt one of the greatest. Reading the original, although in a completely different language, would be, to me at least, over one hundred times greater than reading the modern version. Just knowing it would be the original and unedited copy, would be such a thrill to me and there is a great possibility that some of the story has been lost or left out throughout the years of it being orally told. The other work of literature I would like to get my hands on is the Presidential Diary, even though it may not officially exist. I have seen the Presidential Diary on several occasions on the History Channel and after hearing about what it may, or may not, contain it has been a dream of mine to get my hands on it. Reading about what all the past presidents over the last two-and-a-half decades had to say and what they knew would be an experience all on its own. Also, having the knowledge of knowing what secrets the past presidents have known and passed on to the future line of very select individuals would give me a sense of power and a rush that nothing else could compare to.

Why did you choose the career for which you are preparing?

The reason I choose Psychology as my major and for the career, in which I am preparing, is for the simple reason that I loved the topic and classes I had in high school. Going in to my senior year of high school, I didn't have a clue what I wanted to major in while a lot of my friends around me already had plans on their majors. Ever since taking that first class, I have been fascinated with the human mind, brain, and the behaviors that we all share. All throughout my grade school "career" I always did well when it came to writing essays and papers. I did not really notice my interest in writing until my freshman year in college. However, my laziness did come around and "bite me in the butt" and I did not get too much done my first semester. My second semester was a different story, thankfully, and I was able to really able to try and show my full potential to my professors and was able to get much higher grades. On the papers I did not do so great on, I took the notes, comments, and criticisms as a way to better my writing skills and help me to develop the proper writing style I needed. While working on the two studies may bring a lot of challenges, the many all-nighter study sessions, the tons of papers I will have to write, and the many years of schooling and classes to take, it should not be impossible for me to pursue each to the highest educational level I can achieve.
